Faculty of English Language and Literature

Established in 1894, it has numbered among its members some of the most important critics and scholars in the field, not least J.R.R. Tolkien, C.S. Lewis. This tradition of excellence continues to this day, with teaching and research in the Faculty extending from Anglo-Saxon literature to modern world literature and film studies.

To stay at the forefront of its field the Faculty relies on the generous support of donors. Gifts are directed towards the Faculty’s priorities, which include attracting the very best academics in the world by endowing posts and creating new ones, providing early career development Fellowships for young academics and broadening our graduate scholarship programme. We are extremely grateful to our donors who make a great difference to the work of the Faculty, whether by giving a one-off gift of £10, setting up a regular standing order, or making a larger donation.
