The coronavirus pandemic continues to accelerate and affect every aspect of human life. Governments around the world continue to grapple with the pressing concerns of stemming the spread and the scale of the longer term damage to society, health and economies is as yet unknown.
The University of Oxford remains at the forefront of global efforts to understand the coronavirus (COVID-19) and is helping to navigate the way back to a more normal way of living. Over 150 senior scientists at Oxford are learning more each day and driving forward research to protect communities in the UK and throughout the world, including:
- Drug development: Our researchers are developing new drugs to treat COVID-19, and continue testing a wide-range of existing drugs for effectiveness against the disease. Results from our clinical trials have informed patient treatment and are saving lives.
- A vaccine: Oxford’s researchers responded immediately and have developed a promising and advanced COVID-19 vaccine candidate. The vaccine is in clinical trials and initial results offer great hope. We are also working with partners to manufacture and distribute a successful vaccine at scale.
- Mental health. We are exploring the impact of the pandemic and the lockdown on mental health and developing effective interventions to combat trauma, PTSD, depression and loneliness.
- The future of pandemic preparedness: working to ensure knowledge-sharing and high-level collaboration is in place to position the world for any future pandemic threat.
