The coronavirus pandemic continues to affect every aspect of human life. Whilst governments around the world are working to stem the spread of the virus, the scale of the longer term damage to society, health and economies is yet to be fully understood.
The University of Oxford remains at the forefront of global efforts to understand the coronavirus (COVID-19) and bring us back to a more normal way of living. Hundreds of scientists at Oxford are driving forward research to protect communities in the UK and throughout the world, in areas such as:
- The Oxford/AstraZeneca vaccine, ChAdOx1 nCoV-19, which has been approved by the Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA) and is being rolled out in the UK. More countries are following suit as their own regulators review and approve it.
- Developing new drugs to treat COVID-19, and testing a wide range of existing drugs for effectiveness against the disease. Results from our clinical trials continue to inform patient care and are saving lives.
- Exploring the wide-ranging impact of the pandemic and the lockdown on mental health and are developing effective interventions to combat trauma, PTSD, depression and loneliness.
Over the past year, Oxford's research has been supported by funding from many different sources, including the government, trusts, foundations, industry and individuals like you. We have come a long way since those first few months of 2020.
Yet there is much still to do.
Your support today will help provide urgently needed equipment and resources, accelerate time-critical research, and deliver results as quickly as possible to the people who need it most.
Thank you for being a part of the effort to address this global crisis.
COVID-19 will not be the last disease to challenge our way of life. When the next pandemic happens, the world must be ready for it. By preparing for and investing in innovative and sound science we can ensure resilience, economic stability and global health security for generations to come.
