A new postdoctoral fellowship in American History has been endowed, thanks to a generous gift from the William S. Broadbent Family.

The Rothermere American Institute

The Broadbent Junior Research Fellowship will give an exceptional early career scholar the opportunity to undertake a significant piece of research for publication, develop their experience of teaching in a university environment, and work alongside a group of established specialists in American history at Oxford.

As well as belonging to the University's Rothermere American Institute, the three-year award will alternate its college association between St Edmund Hall and Christ Church.

'The Broadbent Junior Research Fellowship will be a great addition to Oxford's American history community,' says Pekka Hämäläinen, Rhodes Professor of American History. 'Postdoctoral scholarships give vital opportunities to scholars embarking on academic careers and we all look forward to welcoming the Broadbent Fellow in October.'

Avery W. Broadbent (St Edmund Hall, 2004) and William S. Broadbent, Jr. (Christ Church, 2006) both studied at the Rothermere American Institute, and received Master of Studies, Modern History. With the Broadbent family's support, the Broadbent Junior Research Fellowship has been endowed in perpetuity.

Professor Keith Gull CBE, Principal of St Edmund Hall, adds: 'We are extremely grateful to the Broadbent family for their generosity and support.'
