Wytham Woods is a 1000-acre woodland, owned and maintained by the University of Oxford since 1942. It was donated to the University by the ffennell family after the death of their only child, Hazel, on condition that: The woodlands were also left for the enjoyment of the people of Oxford, and that a permit system would allow access to over 32 km of walking paths.
Wytham Woods is one of the most researched pieces of woodland in the world, exceptionally rich in flora and fauna, with over 500 species of plants, a wealth of woodland habitats, and 800 species of butterflies and moths.
With your help we’re able to provide a number of public engagement events, including Forest Schools for local Primary schools. This exciting initiative makes use of the woods as an outdoor classroom to build confidence and self-esteem in children through nature studies and team building.
Here are some of the ways in which your donation can make a difference:
• £10 would pay for the expense of fitting new bee nest-boxes
• £30 would pay for a citizen science walk in the woods led by experts
• £50 would cover the cost of maintaining 6 hectares of woodland for Forest School days
• £500 would assist maintaining our world-class monitoring plots
